The Strategies in Concrete exhibition was supplemented by a display of important examples of concrete architecture and infrastructure in Bodø¸. The objective was to establish a thematic link between Sverre Gullesen’s works and our own town, its architectural history and the huge development task that we face.
The display included architectural photographs from the Teigen Collection (Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology) depicting Brutalist buildings such as Aspåsen School, Bodø¸ Swimming Pool and the SAS Hotel by the architects Cappelen & Rodahl, Bodø¸ City Hall and Bodø¸ Cathedral by Blakstad and Munthe-Kaas, as well as photographs of the construction of the civilian airport and military air base.
The military air base was finished in 1956, and subsequently the civilian airport was built in several stages. In 1988, the construction of a new civilian terminal was approved, as the existing building had insufficient capacity. Today’s terminal was designed by BOARCH Architects and was completed in 1990.
The photographs on display included not only completed buildings, but also provided insights into construction process and the use of materials, inviting viewers to reflect on questions such as: From a cultural heritage perspective, and from a greenhouse gas perspective, what should we preserve, and why? And what is the best way to achieve this?
